(Oakland, CA) – Wednesday, April 18, 2012 – Join the founders of Hub Oakland (HO) and Earthseed Consulting for a technology mixer and meet-up launching the NewMe Community in Oakland, and highlighting the work of six local social enterprise founders utilizing new media in their professional and personal work. The Hub Oakland New Media event is Friday, April 20, 2012 from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. at OaKollectiv, 1427 Broadway, Oakland, CA. RSVP at http://newme-oakland-mixer.eventbrite.com/
Hub Oakland’s NewMe (short for “new media”) Mixer is the first public offering from the start-up incubator space slated to open in Dec 2012 in the Uptown District at 23rd and Broadway. Over the next 8 months the HO Collective will launch and test its brand though a series of co-hosted events with groups such as 2.Oak, PopUp Hood, Innovive.net, and Numi Tea, that will cultivate and highlight local and national makers, activists, creatives and inventors working in a myriad of areas from gaming to food to policymaking to solar energy.
Also being utilized as an on-ramp into the East Bay for the NewMe Accelerator Program which was featured on CNN’s Black In America 4 in 2011, Hub Oakland Founders hope Friday’s (already sold-out) event will help to entice the residential start-up incubator for businesses that are led by under-represented minorities in the technology industry, to also consider occupying a house in “The Town” which is home to national tech leaders such as Pandora Radio and Sungevity. The current NewMe Accelerator class of 7 inventors is currently being housed at Hub San Francisco. NewMe Founder, Angela Benton will share details around the programming and encourage mixer participants to apply. More info can be found at newmeaccelerator.com
“Intentional and strategic creative collaboration is the foundation for the internationally successful Hub business model” said Hub Oakland CEO, Konda Mason when asked about the vision for the community mixer. “By connecting founders, funders, organizers and media professionals to social entrepreneurial approaches in celebration and support of minority-powered innovators, we participate not only in placemaking, but also in movement building.” Part of Hub Oakland’s mission is to cultivate local and global impact by providing access to space, ideas, mentors and resources.
Hub Oakland’s goal to create the place where innovative thinking, entrepreneurship, and a passion to change the world meet, is already modeled in its multi-cultural and professionally diverse founders which include; Konda Mason, Lisa Chacon, Ed West, Ashara Ekundayo, Pandora Thomas, Ahmed Rahim, Zakiya Harris and Jeff Leifer. The collective represents the breadth of unique opportunity available to Oakland-based and new start-up businesses willing to design a new paradigm of networking partnerships. The traditional Hub model is about to get a retrofit. Check-out more info on Bay Area Hubs at bayarea.the-hub.net
